Developing Common Educational Resources

Over the past months, the 1System 4 Inland Waterway Learning project has made strong progress in the development of shared educational resources for both vocational training and lifelong learning in the inland waterway transport (IWT) sector.

Project partners collaborated to update and design new learning materials based on the ES-QIN Table of Competencies. These include interactive moduleslearning objects, and animations aimed at strengthening essential practical skills. To support structured content development, storyboards were created for various thematic chapters, with a focus on producing user-centered, accessible, and engaging educational tools.

Highlights of New Learning Modules:

  • 🛡️ Cybersecurity in IWT
Developed by FH OÖ Campus Steyr | Faculty of Business and Management and Schifferberufskolleg RHEIN in Duisburg, this dual-module package introduces learners to cybersecurity basics in the IWT context. Elements of gamification make the learning process interactive and impactful.
  • 🔋 Hydrogen & Fuel Cells in Inland Shipping
Created by Maritieme Academie Harlingen, this innovative module explores the use of hydrogen as a clean fuel and explains how fuel cells generate energy efficiently. The module includes detailed information on hydrogen properties, safety considerations, and real-world applications—making it both theoretically rich and practically relevant for future maritime professionals.

All educational materials are made available via the European IWT platform INeS, ensuring broad accessibility for students, trainers, and industry professionals across Europe.

Beyond these featured examples, all project partners have contributed additional content, reinforcing a shared commitment to modern, high-quality, and future-proof learning in the IWT sector. This collaborative effort continues to strengthen teaching capacities and promote innovation in inland navigation education.
